Inorganic chemistry pervades many important areas and is central to a diverse range of modern chemical research. Inorganic chemistry unites multi-disciplinary research endeavors including catalyst development, the synthesis of novel polymeric materials, access to new biomaterials, the science of nanomaterials, new synthetic methods for organic chemistry, solid-state and materials science, chemical biology and the development of alternative energy sources. Research at the University of Virginia reflects the growing multi-disciplinary nature of inorganic chemistry. Efforts in the Bryant, Chruma, Demas, Fraser, Gunnoe, Harman, Harrison and Pu groups span a range of topics. Students with an interest in inorganic chemistry can find opportunities in the development of biomaterials, organometallic chemistry including the design and study of homogeneous catalysts, polymer synthesis, the application of spectroscopy to study metals in biology, understanding the photophysics of luminescent metal complexes as well as the study of chemistry at single crystal surfaces to enhance our understanding of catalytic reactions.
