Specialization in Biochemistry
Research with Prof. James Landers

Stephen is from Reston, VA, and went to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He has done research in the Landers Lab since the fall of his 3rd year on polymethyl methacrylate microchips for DNA preparation and amplification.  His main project has been a device that integrates these two processes on one microchip.   This integrated microchip can accept saliva samples on a buccal swab, digest the collected cells and prepare the DNA for amplification via the polymerase chain reaction, and finally produce amplified DNA product which can then be readily analyzed by electrophoresis or other methods.  Stephen’s post-graduation plans are to pursue an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, and eventually perform research in the field of cell and molecular biomedical engineering.
