Alex Mathew

Alex was born in Charlottesville, VA and graduated from Western Albemarle High School. He is a Chemistry (B. Sc.)/Mathematics double major and does his research under Dr. James Demas in the Department of Chemistry. Over the last 3 semesters Alex has developed a low cost, time resolved, spatially resolved, and mobile system suited to multiple types of luminescence imaging. It utilizes the features of digital cameras including multicolor channels, time-gated data output, and pixel sensor arrays to capture various molecular properties of light emitting species in real time. The system is currently capable of generating Stern-Volmer plots, lifetime imaging with lifetimes accurate within 1%, and ratiometric oxygen imaging. Current and future work will involve testing more applications of the system such as imaging hypoxic regions of the human body.
Following graduation, Alex plans on continuing his research at UVa, raising his puppy, Walter (named after Breaking Bad chemist, Walter White), and eventually pursuing an MD-PhD.
